The CoEP is currently advertising for a number of postdoctoral research posotions.

These offer oppurtunities in the key areas of optical fibre sensing and fibre lasers and will integrate with the recently formed new research institute, IPAS – the institute for Photonics & Advanced Sensing.

Funding for new Institute

The staff and students at the Centre of Expertise in Photonics are excited to announce that we have been successful in a bid for $28.8 million from the Federal Government for the establishment of a new Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS).

This funding, along with $1.5M of capital funding from our State Government and $1.3M capital funding from the University of Adelaide will allow us to substantially extend the physics building. This will accommodate laboratories and office space for the new institute. It is anticipated the new building will be operational in 2011.

In addition to the infrastructure funding IPAS will receive operational funding, for 5 years in the first instance, from the University of Adelaide and from the South Australian State Government.

In conjunction with the University of Adelaide we will create an internationally leading transdisciplinary Institute which will allow us to develop new fibre-based platform technologies to underpin paradigm-changing tools for a wide range of research.

Researchers from a wide range of fields will use the world-class facilities to develop breakthroughs in areas such as physics, chemistry, biology and environmental science.

The Institute will be led by Professor Tanya Monro, Federation Fellow, in the School of Chemistry & Physics. Professor Monro says the new Institute aims to become the international leader in developing new fibre-based technologies that underpin health, the environment, industrial processes and defence systems. Tanya was quoted as saying “I’m thrilled that the Federal Government has provided significant support for an area of research that has the potential to benefit almost every aspect of our lives. This Institute will be unrivalled in the world in the quality of its facilities, and it will attract some of Australia’s and the world’s best and brightest minds. We expect the Institute to earn around $78 million in research income by the year 2020.”
