			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>The CoEP will soon be part of the new Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS).  IPAS will be a transdisciplinary entity, building on the University of Adelaide’s leadership in photonics and optical fibre research. Federal funding of $28.8m will provide a new building to accommodate the rapid growth of IPAS.</p>
<p>As part of the expansion we are seeking persons in the roles of <a href="http://www.adelaide.edu.au/jobs/current/1269/">laboratory management </a>and <a href="http://www.adelaide.edu.au/jobs/current/15362/">strategic development</a>. Both positions represent an exciting oppurtunity to be part of a leading optical fibre research centre worldwide.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;">The staff and students at the Centre of Expertise in Photonics are excited to announce that we have been successful in a bid for $28.8 million from the Federal Government for the establishment of a new Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS).</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;">This funding, along with $1.5M of capital funding from our State Government and $1.3M capital funding from the University of Adelaide will allow us to substantially extend the physics building.<span> </span>This will accommodate laboratories and office space for the new institute.  It is anticipated the new building will be operational in 2011.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;">In addition to the infrastructure funding IPAS will receive operational funding, for 5 years in the first instance, from the University of Adelaide and from the South Australian State Government.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;">In conjunction with the University  of Adelaide we will create an internationally leading transdisciplinary Institute which will allow us to develop new fibre-based platform technologies to underpin paradigm-changing tools for a wide range of research.<span> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;">Researchers from a wide range of fields will use the world-class facilities to develop breakthroughs in areas such as physics, chemistry, biology and environmental science.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;">The Institute will be led by Professor Tanya Monro, Federation Fellow, in the School of Chemistry &amp; Physics.<span> </span>Professor Monro says the new Institute aims to become the international leader in developing new fibre-based technologies that underpin health, the environment, industrial processes and defence systems.<span> </span>Tanya was quoted as saying &#8220;I&#8217;m thrilled that the Federal Government has provided significant support for an area of research that has the potential to benefit almost every aspect of our lives. <span> </span>This Institute will be unrivalled in the world in the quality of its facilities, and it will attract some of Australia&#8217;s and the world&#8217;s best and brightest minds.<span> </span>We expect the Institute to earn around $78 million in research income by the year 2020.&#8221;</span></p>

<p>The Centre has recently won funding to extend our work in the sensing area to applications in environmental monitoring.  This is position is supported by an ARC 2009 Linkage Grant for the project entitled <strong>“Optical fibre-dip sensors for in-situ environmental monitoring”</strong>.  The successful candidate will work closely with our industry partner to develop the first in-fibre water quality sensors.</p>
<p>This is a rare opportunity to become part of a vibrant team at a time of rapid expansion.</p>
<p><strong>Salary:</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>Level A:  $59,736 &#8211; $66,567 per annum<br />
Level B:  $70,075 &#8211; $83,215 per annum</p>
<p>Attractive superannuation benefits also apply.</p>
<p>Postdoctoral research position for 3 years.</p>
